I love following the Pantone colors, flipping through the decks of swatches, lining up coordinating shades, and styling my layouts based on the vibrant colors that pique my interest. Since seasonal colors have been popping up in stores, wardrobes, and editorials everywhere, I thought I would pick out a few pieces that were been inspired by the Spring color trends. I love the fresh mossy shade of a muted green and while pops of neon and bright yellows and pinks are always fun, an understated hue can be just as interesting. Delicate flats, patterned curtains, and an extremely dreamy garden scent are a few of the Spring greens I'm looking forward to.

Easy appetizer: cheese and honey

On Friday's after work, Paul and I like to put together a plate of appetizers rather than making an entire dinner. Sitting down to a spread of fun nibbles and a few cocktails is an incredible way to unwind, but when our evening doesn't offer such a leisurely amount of time, I still like to pull together something to snack on. This little recipe of goat cheese and honey uses three ingredients and is ready in a matter of moments. The key is to use really good simple items, like a strong cheese (just buy a little piece if it's too expensive). If you don't have rosemary honey, just finely chop some fresh rosemary leaves and sprinkle them on top.

Does anyone else have weekend rituals like this one they would love to share?

I definitely have my fair share of dark clothing, like shoes, dresses, and my favorite black jeans, but I don't shy away from color either. Since this past Sunday was an exceptionally sunny day, I thought the best way to enjoy the shine was to complement it with a mix of Spring color. This candy colored purse and mint coat will definitely be in heavy rotation in the coming months and paired with some sky-high patent heels, the look felt playful and transitioned perfectly into the evening. I've been holding onto this coat for several years now, but I think this Spring it will truly get the wear it deserves.

His and Hers: Cuffed ankles

I have a style that is distinctly different from my husband's, but every now and then he'll appear with an outfit that has such an interesting element, I can't help by take a little inspiration from it. While classic feminine looks will always be my wardrobe inspiration, I thought it would be fun to style one look in two different ways; one worn by the guy and the other styled distinctly for girls. Also, I figured it was about time I gave the guys a little credit on my blog. For this post, I looked to the cuffed and cropped look that has that distinct effortless quality found in the best outfits. Desert boots, paired with a peek of an interesting sock, topped off with ankle-grazing jeans rolled into tiny cuffs is a great unisex look. Try it with a little hint of neon, a swiss dot pattern for girls, or a humorous emblem for guys (mustache and glasses do the trick).

I thought I would share the combination over here, because I absolutely love the aromatic mix of orange, whiskey, and sugar (even if a small sip from my husband's glass is all I can manage). I love weekends that allow for leisurely breakfasts, open days, and long afternoons, but once Sunday evening passes, it's back to the rush early Monday morning. I would love to extend that homemade breakfast moment a little longer during the week and for me that means paying extra attention to the display of everything. Using a vibrant tray in bed and pretty floral plates, instead of a quick meal in the living room before running out the door, are a few ways to savor a quiet morning during the week. Add great glasses and a colorful way to enjoy your coffee and the work week seems much more manageable after a mini weekend-style breakfast.

Shades of orange

A few weeks ago Paul and I took a weekend afternoon to enjoy the snow free sidewalks and rather mild climate with a walk downtown. While I'll never be a fan of winter, I do enjoy brisk afternoons that require a few layers and of course something warm to sip. These rusty orange jeans seemed like the perfect way to add a bit of cold-weather color (an embrace to orange trend) while a few extra sparkly pieces of jewelry and my favorite coat kept me feeling polished. After visiting a favorite old bookstore and people watching along the sidewalk, our impromptu trip around town turned into a fun way to enjoy a leisurely afternoon.

Cold soba noodle bowl

Right after college I got in the habit of eating everything out of bowls. After battling traffic on the way home from work, it was so much easier to just mix up some veggies, add rice, and throw everything in a bowl and unwind. Luckily, my culinary interest grew and I started to take the time to actually plan out meals and make them a bit more presentable when serving. However, from time to time I do get the urge to make those one bowl meals, but now I have the experience to make them a little more interesting. This cold noodle dish involves a few extra steps, but once everything is prepared, it takes no time at all to assemble. Grill the chicken breasts and set aside, boil the water while slicing the cucumber and green onions, mix the sesame oil and soy sauce while the noodles cool, then instantly everything is ready to mix together. A sprinkle of garnish and the bowl looks much more presentable than my faux stir-fry versions of the past.

Cold soba noodles with cucumber, chicken, and green onion (serves 2)

1 bunch buckwheat soba noodles
1 smal1 cucumber peeled
1 chicken breast
1 bunch green onion chopped
2 tblsp. low sodium soy sauce
1 tblsp. sesame oil
2 tsp. roasted unsalted peanuts

- Season the chicken breast with salt and pepper. Saute and set aside to cool.
- Bring a small pot of water to a boil and cook soba noodles like you would with spaghetti. Once cooked, strain under cold running water, tossing so they don't stick.
- In a medium bowl combine soy sauce and sesame oil. Add the cold soba noodles.
- Slice cucumber in long thin strips, about 2" long. Finely chop the green onion and add both to the bowl of noodles.
- Shred the chicken breast and add to the bowl.
- Toss everything to combine. Add extra soy sauce and sesame oil if needed.
- Garnish with 2 tsp. chopped peanuts per bowl.

A fun find

I must spend an insane amount of time clicking through Pinterest, ffffound, and Tumblr. Throw in a stack of magazines and I have a pretty substantial collection of inspirational material. I thought a useful way of sharing the items that pique my interest, and are just too good to pass up, would be to start a new post series about fun finds. This week it's a shiny discovery from the organizational wonderland, The Container Store. These lacquered boxes would look amazing on a desk or stacked in various colors and sizes on a bookshelf. I love the color combo here, but I also have my eye on the yellow and red versions.

Whether it's a simple book for the table, displaying a rather impressive restaurant card, or offering a shining bowl of sweets purely for temptation, the small things are what create a welcoming environment. This weekend felt like Spring had arrived months earlier than it should and while a lot of people were complaining that there wasn't any snow on the ground, I took the chance to revel in the sunny days by spending most of my time outside. A leisurely coffee break and museum trip, followed by some vintage clothes perusing felt like the perfect opportunity to add a little brightness to my outfit. A sparkling sweater and herringbone blazer received a neon kick with a breezy blouse underneath, topped off by a lovely pin. The leisurely day left me feeling quite energized and hopeful that the lovely sun might stick around a bit longer.

When you're tall, one of the traits that goes along with long limbs is long feet. I've spent most of my life scouring shoes from the back racks of the shoe department, lusting after the petit heel that just won't fit. While I thought the key to hiding feet that aren't necessarily a size 6 or 7 was to steer clear of anything pointed, I've learned that embracing the point might actually be the key. A tapered point can actually add an extra bit of elegance to an outfit while slimming feet, rather than pointing out their size. After seeing the return of the pointed pump in Spring footwear, I decided that a slender point would be the chicest option for ballet flats and heels during the warm and sunny months to come.

Sparkling cocktail picks

Tools: Martha Stewart smokey quartz glitter, Martha Stewart glue and sealer, bamboo skewers, red pom poms

I've slowly started to put a few red and pink inspired decorations around the house. Not too much, jut a simple silver bowl of sweets, chipboard letters over the window and small tea lights nestled in with the usual coffee table centerpiece, but the saddest part of decorating is knowing that your hard work only lasts a few weeks before it gets boxed away for next year. This is why I decided to craft a little bit of red sparkle that I could live with well after the 14th has passed, more specifically, a little embellishment for the bar. Using long skewers, red pom poms, and a smokey glitter I put together sparkling cocktail picks that add a little glamour to an evening cocktail. Collected in a simple jar, they're an addition I plan on repeating well after February has passed.

1. Poke a small hole into to pom pom using the sharp end of a skewer, set aside.

2. Using clear glue, paint a light coat of adhesive over the last 2-3 inches of the skewer.

3. Roll end in glitter until adhesive is completely covered. Dab the end of the skewer in a dot of glue.

4. Insert the pom pom into the glued end of the skewer, holding for a few seconds to set.

5. Place point side down into a jar until completely dry, repeat with remaining pom poms. After all are completed, start mixing some cocktails and enjoy!

When the weather is cold and the sun only pops out for a few hours at a time, it's hard to imagine strolling through a garden in a silky sun dress. Luckily since the weeks are quickly passing, that means those days a fast approaching. I am a big fan of flowers and the bold botanical prints popping up in the stores and on the runways is getting me excited for pastel hued items and floral chiffon fabrics. While a few storms are sure to pass before I get to wear any of these things, I'm going to start preparing early and introduce a few winter friendly florals into the mix, like perfumed nail polish (such a cool idea!) and minty long sleeve blouses. Is anyone else looking forward to any spring trends? I would love to hear.

After spending most of my childhood and teenage years around horses, I've developed a pretty big love for classic equestrian inspired materials and designs. A herringbone coat is one of the first things that comes to mind when I picture riding boots, velvet helmets, and other various leather and buckled garb. While I don't think I'll ever pull out my show boots for a weekend brunch date or a shopping trip, I can take inspiration from the show ring ensemble by mixing in different prints like floral and plaid. A simple dress, cozy scarf, and ankle boots (that have become an everyday item) mix together finish the equestrian inspired look without donning a full costume.

I know it's about a month away, but the Valentine's decorations have started to creep into my house in the form of red and sparkle and cinnamon scented treats. I'm pretty good about not buying sweet things and since I've been on my juice kick lately, the drive to keep eating fresh fruits and veggies is even stronger. However, when my kitchen appliances seem to whimper more than usual and a passing head cold begs for something comforting and tasty, I tend to give in to the sugary thoughts and bake something. Last week I decided to make homemade oreos using this recipe, which resulted in a tasty few nights of cookies and milk with their sickness soothing power. The ingredient list is pretty short and the cookies bake in no time. I got a little heavy handed with the dough rounds, but the oversized oreos were really nothing to complain about. The sweet cookies were short lived and the next day I was back to healthy foods and juices, but the midweek indulgence was a nice treat.

There's something about turning on the red carpet to watch impeccably dressed people saunter down the red carpet in gorgeous gowns. It's an event that gets the whole town in a frenzy and while I may be miles away from Los Angeles, I still find comfort in sitting in front of the TV to yay and nay the dresses as they pass. Last night's Golden Globes definitely seemed to be a celebration of sparkle, hair acessories, and form fitting shapes. My two favorite trends, however, were popping colors like yellow, red, and deep blue along with vintage inspired silhouettes with embellishment. Did anyone else watch the Golden Globes last night?

Ever since I moved into a new place in Ann Arbor, I've been on a mission to make each room as functional and pretty as possible. Of course, this is an ongoing process and a little hard to do when your quirky place has tight corners and your furniture budget is...slowly growing. This past weekend I felt like a happy medium was finally achieved and each room received the finishing touches on a tight budget. A graphic blanket, new coffee table, and small knick knacks came together to complete each room, making them cozy and eclectic.

Dresses are the main item that fill my closet. Vintage, evening, and cocktail varieties seem to dominate that racks, but while they look great hanging, they don't seem to be practical when I'm trying to pick out an everyday outfit. Finding good daytime dresses has always been at the top of my shopping list, that's why when Ladyee Boutique gave me this great wrap dress to try out, I was excited to finally have a go-to staple dress. Juicy juice

I've always been a pretty big veggie fan and don't shy away from green things too much, so when I was given a juicer for Christmas, I was anxious to try out some homemade leafy drinks. The machine is admittedly frightening, given that it sounds like a plane taking off, but the colors it produces are completely fun. Bright lime green, deep purple, even a sunset orange make the veggie and fruit juice combinations enticing to try. Since all resolutions are in full gear right now, I went for a trusty green drink to finish out the week. It's a slightly savory juice with a ginger mint aftertaste and while I'm sure it's a little bit of my head tricking me, I did feel healthier and more awake at the start of my day after drinking it.

*If you don't have a juicer, try a smoothie with the same green hue. Replace the cucumber and melon with a frozen banana and grate the ginger to form a paste. Blend everything in a blender with 1 cup soy milk.

Over the holidays I definitely made the most of the sunny days and warm weather by combining clothes that didn't need an extra jacket, bundle of a scarf, or mittens. Taking advantage of the mild days always makes outfit planning a much easier task and while I may need to think ahead over the coming months about my ensembles (leaving LA for a real winter was a little hard to do) I can definitely take some inspiration from my California outfits and mix them in to my winter wear. I had been eyeing these boots since the Fall and when I found them over the holidays I decided to treat myself to an early present. The stacked heel and simple black leather make these shoes perfect for any climate and while my denim blouse may need to be replaced with a substantial sweater, the sunny look can still keep me warm all winter long.

I always get excited around the new year because I start thinking of all the things I would like to accomplish in the next 12 months. Career goals, personal landmarks, even simple changes seem somewhat attainable at the turn of a new year. 2011 was definitely full of amazing moments as well as a few tough ones along the way. Life lately: On vacation

I'm halfway through my holiday trip at home and have been taking full advantage of the free days, sunny weather, and endless new and favorite spots to try. After wrapping the final presents, Christmas came and went so quickly, but the days following brought a traditional holiday tea, a museum visit, and lots of good food along the way. I'm looking forward to keeping this vacation feeling going all through the week and weekend, before it's back to reality on Monday. I hope everyone is enjoying the short week and getting ready for New Years!

Last night Paul and I headed home to Los Angeles for Christmas and New Years. Being back always relaxes me and this trip I'm looking forward to a week filled with new places, relaxing, and visiting with friends and family. It hasn't quite yet turned into the winter wonderland I expected the Midwest to be, but the weather has still lived up to its chilly nature. This season I am much better at layering and keeping warm than I was for my first Michigan winter last year. Still, I find it a little hard to pair multiple layers while still looking somewhat cute. To help make dressing a bit easier, I've made sure to collect some good staples that can carry me through the winter. A trusty trench coat, poncho sweater, and a blanket-like scarf are a few of the pieces I use to to help with this process. Layered on top of each other, with a shoulder draped jacket, I always feel much more polished, but even more importantly, much warmer.

This past weekend, Paul and I celebrated our pre-Christmas. It's a little tradition we've been doing for the past three years where we cook a fabulous dinner, unwrap gifts, and toast with a good amount of champagne. This year felt extra special since it will be our first holiday season as a married couple, so the dinner had to reflect the sentiment. Sometimes the simplest ingredients can give the best restaurant quality meal and these phyllo purses of goat cheese, lemon zest, and chives were quick to make and tasted pretty special next to a bed of simple greens. They can even be made ahead, frozen, and baked as needed, perfect for a little impromptu entertaining when a bagged salad just doesn't seem special enough.

Mache salad with goat cheese purses

For salad:
1 bag mache lettuce leaves
juice of 1/2 lemon
2 tblsp olive oil
salt and pepper

For goat cheese purses:
3 sheets phyllo dough
1 small log of goat cheese
1-2 tblsp chopped chives
zest of 1 lemon
1 tblsp butter melted
salt and pepper

- Unroll package of phyllo dough and separate 3 pieces. Roll remaining dough and place back in fridge or frreezer.
- Lay 1 sheet of dough on baking sheet and brush with melted butter. Lay second sheet over and repeat. Continue until the 3 sheets are stacked and brushed with butter.
- In a small bowl combine goat cheese, lemon zest, chives, salt and pepper.
- Divide mixture into 4 mounds on the phyllo dough, cut into 4 squares.
- Gather the squares around the mixture, gently twisting at the top to form a closed pouch.
-Bake according to package (about 15 min.)

- While purses are baking, combine lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper in a small bowl, whisking to create an emulsion.
- Pour over mache and toss to combine.
- When purses are ready, plate salad and top with warm goat cheese pouch.

This year I'm wrapping up my presents and shipping them back home so they can safely rest under my family's Christmas tree, rather than make my luggage that much heavier. I like to take my time picking the perfect paper, color coordinating the adornments, and finishing everything off with embellished handwriting. Of course, it's a little over the top, but with the array of vibrant colors and fun additions to choose from, I really can't help myself. Since shipping these meant I couldn't go overboard, I chose three simple elements to work into each package, gift wrap, a tissue paper cumberbun, and ribbon. Add a simple tag and the goods were perfectly adorned for their temporary FedEx homes.

To make the tissue paper cumberbun, start with the shiny side of the paper facing up and pinch both ends of the paper a few inches from the bottom. Fold the strip slightly above the edge of the paper. Pinch another strip slightly above your fold and repeat. Continue until sheet is completely folded.

I am a big Pantone fan so when they announced the 2012 color of the year, Tangerine Tango, last week, I already started thinking of new ways to infuse the hue into my decorating. A tangerine lip or a bright dress are my first thoughts when it comes to the citrusy shade, but I'd also like to incorporate it in a way that can last a bit longer. Adding a pop of tangerine in the living room, office, even on the walls seems like the perfect way to acknowledge the trend without going overboard. Mixed with cream, white, silver, even similar shades like coral and fuchsia, tangerine can look fun and sophisticated.

I know it is the saying of the season, but this year the holidays came up way too fast. I always have an image of finishing all of my shopping ahead of time, baking for every friend, family member, and acquaintance in my life, and hosting a few cocktail parties in between. As a lover of traditional things, I've always found the act of setting a table, complete with multiple pieces of silverware, glasses galore, and not one, but two plates at each spot, to be a truly beautiful act. The excitement of walking into a hotel or restaurant that has gone the extra mile with their tables is something I like to create for friends and family at home. This Thanksgiving was the perfect excuse to liven up the table a bit, especially since 20 people were going to sit around it. While I didn't have an endless supply of china and silver, I took inspiration from more ornate tables and pulled together new and antique items to make a toned down, warm setting that felt perfect for the holiday.

A taste of St. Tropez

It's become a bit of a tradition to go out to a fun restaurant on my birthday and since I am a die hard traditions keeper, this weekend welcomed yet another new restaurant into the dining club. I came across Rosé while I was hunting for the perfect spot to spend the evening and was immediately allured by its St. Tropez inspired food, crystal and pink decor, and endless champagne cocktail menu (the name was just icing on the cake). The entire dining room is anchored by a long tiled table that reflects the metallic rose ceiling panels above, waiters all look dapper in their blush pink bowties and the simple round tables and banquettes are accented with soft coral upholstery. To drive the French feeling home, the entire back wall is lined with vibrant rosé wine bottles, which of course was the drink of the night. Not only was the decor a perfect romantic rosey hue, but the food was incredibly tasty as well. True to the Mediterranean beach life that inspired the restaurant, our meal was leisurely, tasty, and topped off the the sweetest assortment of desserts...including a few deliciously over sized French macarons.

This weekend I went home to celebrate my birthday with friends, indulge in some much needed relaxation, and of course, enjoy a few champagne toasts at dinner. I always take the opportunity to dress up when dinner is going to be a little more special than the norm. Something about putting on a fun dress, dusting on makeup that has a little extra sparkle, and accenting with the perfect accessories makes any night feel more memorable...especially when it's celebrating something fun. I picked up this dress earlier in the year and the short silhouette and party dress style felt like the perfect thing to wear for a birthday. Paired with classic black accessories, the outfit became the perfect combo of understated and fun.

I'm finally back home and lucky enough to have a day to unwind before I have to go to work tomorrow. It feels amazing having an afternoon to get things in order and work on a few of my own design projects. Right after summer ended I told myself that I was going to focus my energies and get things moving forward with my creative work. While the 9-5, daily errands, and meetings can definitely take a hold of anyone's schedule pretty quickly, I've dedicated time during the evening and on weekends to work on my own creative outlets, which have turned into a few fun stationary and logo projects. After perusing the amazing fonts on Veer I grouped together my ideas and compiled some fun icons I've been working on lately for some stationary templates.

After writing this blog for over 2 years, I've discovered that I have a very particular view of how I want my photos to look. I know Paul can attest to my complaints of a photo being too dark, blurry, or from the wrong angle and while this can go a little overboard, it's left me with a great selection of images that never made it into my posts. Currently, I love clicking through the little details that go into outfit posts and while the accessories, nail polish, or slight winged tip of an eyeliner sometimes get overlooked, it's fun to pull out a few special ones to highlight. Does anyone else have photos they seem to hold onto forever?

Apple crisp

I'm sure you could have guessed this, but the trip to the apple orchard resulted in a bag of apples that was definitely a bit too big for two people to finish on their own. Thinking ahead to the excitement I would have on my fifth day with an apple in my lunch, I decided to use up some of the sweet Golden Delicious right away and make a crisp. I like to bake, but when it comes to pies, tarts, or anything that involves a crust that needs to be made ahead of time, I quickly give up and choose not to feel defeated in the kitchen. Therefore, a crumble recipe is my answer to fruit dessert. Sliced apples coated in sugar and cinnamon are topped with a crumb mix of butter, brown sugar, flour, and oats. Mixed easily with my hands and sprinkled on top and within 45 minutes my kitchen smelled like a spiced home worthy of any fancy pie.

I know I'm a little late jumping on the apple picking / Fall pastime bandwagon, but after living in Michigan for a little over a year now, I finally managed to indulge in some hot cider, a sugared doughnut, and a bag of fresh apples. Last weekend, Paul and I ventured south to a little orchard where we wandered through the gorgeous groves, sat on wooden benches to sip cider, and embraced our wide-eyed expressions as we enjoyed a tradition that was completely foreign to us, but will surely become a favorite activity.

Party time: Raising the bar

I've mentioned before, that entertaining is one of my favorite things to do and now that Halloween has passed, it's time to get ready for the cocktail party season. Nothing is more fun than walking into a home that has a delicious array of bites and sweets, but what often gets neglected is the bar. Of course, a few bottles of wine and a nice selection of mixed drinks is the perfect way to welcome gets to unwind, but I like to elevate the mixing station and make a spread that is as memorable as the food itself. Invite guests to top off their champagne with fresh fruit purees, sliced strawberries, or a splash of juice with a champagne bar (find purees in specialty stores or blend frozen fruit with sugar syrup). Choose classic glass flutes and arrange the purees in vintage glass bottles. Finish it off with a personalized coaster for a memorable touch. For an all ages approach, instead of passing around mugs of hot chocolate, create a coco station, complete with marshmallow varieties and gourmet chocolate for a luxurious approach to the classic drink. A simple wood stirrer surpasses the plastic party spoon too. These are just a few simple ideas to make a party a little more memorable while, of course, creating amazing cocktails and drinks.

I have always been in love with evening coats, even growing up in California, I longed for chilly nights to slip on something special for a night out. Their large buttons, sturdy fabrics, and feminine shapes make me wish I could live without my sleeping bag/ down jacket this winter and make every night a lady-like affair. Unfortunately, my Los Angeles blood is going to keep me in numerous knitted layers and down fabrics during the coming months, but every once in a while it's fun to brave the cold and put on an outer piece that is just as special as what is hiding underneath. This coat was one of my first fancy outerwear pieces. It's long white shape and soft velvet collar make it the perfect addition to evening looks and paired with a few other sumptuous pieces, like a silk dress and velvet shoes, the outfit made an equally warm and fancy combination.

I love entertaining and luckily Paul has the same excitement as I do for sprucing up our place, laying out a spread of delicious food, and crafting the perfect party mix. Since I tend to obsess a little too much over making all of the food, decorating, and displaying everything perfectly, I've learned to take a few shortcuts that still result in tasty and convenient bites. My favorite new go-to are mini panini with simple contrasting flavors, like a strong Gouda cheese and tart honeycrisp apples. Paired with thinly sliced baguette, each component of the tiny sandwiches can be prepared ahead of time and assembled quickly before the guests arrive. Serve stacked high on a wooden tray for a rustic touch and the result is a warm cheesy treat with an unexpected crisp, that looks every bit gourmet.

Mini Gouda and honeycrisp panini
1 fresh baguette
1 block strong Gouda (I like goat's milk Gouda)
1 large honeycrisp apple or other hard tart variety
juice of 1/2 lemon

Ahead of time:
- Slice baguette into thin slices. Don't slice diagonally, you want two-bite sized sandwiches.
- Slice cheese into 1" x 2" rectangles
- Slice apple by cutting around core to make 4 large pieces, then cut those into small slices. Toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.

20 min before guests arrive:
- Heat up panini press (a skillet can provide the same look if you push down lightly with a spatula to melt and compress everything together)
- Assemble sandwiches by placing one slice cheese and one slice apple between two pieces of bread. Arrange each in a row on the press.
- While sandwiches are grilling, assemble the remaining ingredients so they will be ready to press when the others are finished.
- Arrange sandwiches in a stack on a long serving board (I like thin cheese boards).

Nothing is quite as alluring as the impact a touch of vamp can add to someone's personal style. Moody colors, a silk slip, even a rather musky candle can add that mysterious touch that only seems to work when it is unknowingly achieved. I've held onto a deep plum lipstick that I use to stain my lips, slip into a silk robe on lazy mornings, even replace a light perfume with something a bit muskier during the daytime to switch up the normal routine. Even if it's something simple for the home, the small touches create a great unexpected combo that provide an amazing allure and an edge that is undoubtedly vamp.

I am a huge fan of classic clothes, so when this weekend's perfect Fall weather brought crisp mornings and breezy leaf filled days, I took advantage of it and pulled out some weekend staples. A trench coat, striped tee (which I've been living in lately), and denim were my go-to picks and paired with an overly large purse, my love for the weather was quite visible. I've held on to this bag for a couple of years, ever since Paul woke up at the crack of dawn to buy it for me before it sold out at Target, but after knocking into a few too many people with its rather structured curves, I decided to take a break from the lovely purse. After rediscovering it in my closet, I thought it deserved to go back into the rotation and as I began bumping into people while attempting to run errands, I happily ignored their glares and went on enjoying the beautiful weather and my love-inspired ensemble.

Roasted butternut squash and garlic ravioli with sage

The moment the weather starts to get a littler cooler I like to pull out my mental list of cozy things and attempt to make my home as warm and inviting as possible. One of the best ways to do this is to make something homemade and preferably roasted. On a particularly adventurous night, I decided to achieve that autumn feel by making my own pasta. I love the flavor of the homemade version because it has a meatier quality that dried versions just can't compare to. Paired with roasted butternut squash, garlic, and a simple sage sauce, the homemade raviolis were the perfect Fall comfort food.

Roasted butternut squash & garlic ravioli with sage

For pasta dough:
1 1/2 cup flour
2 eggs
2 tblsp olive oil
pinch of salt

- Pour flour onto a worksurface and create a little well in the middle. Crack both eggs into the well and add olive oil and salt.

- Begin whisking the eggs to combine, then slowly start pulling in flour. Push aside about 3 tablespoons of flour, then continue mixing dough until everything is fully incorporated and you can push a finger into the center and remove it without anything sticking.

- knead dough for about 5 minutes until it feels slightly leathery. Set aside.

For the filling & ravioli:
1 package diced butternut squash
3 garlic cloves
olive oil, salt, pepper to taste

- In a pan, layout squash and garlic (unpeeled) and top with olive oil, salt and pepper.

- Roast at 400 degrees until soft. Remove the garlic peel and in the pan, smash the garlic and squash to form a slightly smooth mixture.

- Roll out pasta dough to form a very thin sheet, then place 2 small rows of filling towards the top. Fold over the bottom and cut out each little pouch with a knife.

- Seal all of the edges by crimping the square with your finger.

- Cook pasta in boiling water for 10 minutes, or until all are floating on the top.

For the sauce:
2 tblsp fresh sage chopped finely
2 tblsp butter
1/2 tblsp butter

- In pan over low heat, melt butter and olive oil. Add sage and simmer until butter is slightly browned.

- Arrange pasta on a plate and drizzle with sauce.

Lacquered jewelry bowls

I love collecting little keepsakes on my vanity, a silver tray for necklaces and perfumes, red leather boxes and a few candles to keep everything scented nicely, but I am always in the mood to switch things up a bit as well. The look of bowls holding an assortment of jeweled, sparkly things is one of my favorite home decor touches. The slightly mismatched feel has a wonderfully eclectic quality and instead of buying a pre-made ceramic holder, I decided to craft a few myself. Using a few metallic and vibrant paints, tape, and a finishing gloss, I created the perfect jewelry holders with a touch of playful shimmer and a good dose of color.

1. Pick thin ceramic bowls, not too deep, and in a small to medium size. Wash and dry to remove any dust.

2.Select a few colors that look good together (I went with a sunny glitter, metallic gold paint, and turquoise to match)

3. Tape off the section that you want to paint with painter's tape. This is where it's fun to get creative, paint the entire bowl, a small circle, or a little strip to make a dip effect.

4. Using long strokes to get a brushed look, paint 3 coats (4 for the glitter), drying with a hairdryer in between each layer. Wipe the lip of the bowl with a paper towel between each coat.

5. Top with a clear gloss coat (only a thing layer so it doesn't drip) and let dry over night. Remove tape once fully dry.

6. Arrange and enjoy your lacquered glittery bowls.

When it's the end of the week and the work day manages to linger a little longer than it should, I like to turn to my outfits to make the day a bit more interesting and exciting. The other morning I couldn't think of a better way to add a little energy to my 9-5 than to pick out the brightest shades in my closet and mix them together for a little pop. It was my equivalent of that large cup of coffee that accompanies me into the office and paired with a fun top knot and a nude chiffon blouse, my purple trousers and burnt orange sweater were the perfect thing to get the day rolling. In addition to the beautiful weather we've had the past few days, my vibrant outfit was helped me power through one more day that took me closer to an alarm-less Saturday morning.

Settling in & looking back

Every time I look back on the past few months, I realize how fast the summer went by, then I shockingly exclaim "Wow, I got married this summer!". It's amazing how fast the months pass and the whirlwind of planning, celebrating, and traveling, are quickly over and life is supposed to go back to normal amidst a haze of wedding buzz. Now that the gifts are finally put away and the last thank you note has been placed in the mailbox, I really feel like it's time to settle in. Of course, the cozy weather and holiday planning really help that along. Although the wrapped boxes and cards have all been opened, every now and then I like to peak at the stack of photos, pull out a few of the hidden shots that made the day so special, and relive the moment.

Color is one of my favorite ways to add a pop to a look. I can spend hours perusing the nail lacquers, lipstick tubes, and pans of eyeshadow at Sephora. The little vibrant packages in an array of different colors always inspire me to work a new hue into my routine. Lately I've been leaning more towards the lipsticks, as seen in this little lineup of colors, and thoroughly enjoy pulling a tube from my makeup case to swipe on something pretty. It feels a little more grown up than pulling out a lipgloss, and infinitely more special than twisting up a waxy stick of chapstick. When I'm prepared to fully commit to the color of choice, a good application is key and these simple steps help keep that vibrant hue going all day long, even through the sad eyes Paul gives me after realizing kissing me will only lead to him wearing the pink.

Dry brush lips lightly with a toothbrush to smooth the skin, then top with chapstick to form a good base.

Lightly line lips with a nude pencil to give a bit of shape.

Using a brush, paint color over entire lip

Cover with one layer of tissue and brush lightly with powder. Repeat previous step so you have two layers of lipstick.

To add a little shine, top with a similar color lipgloss (or clear) near the center of your lips.

...then proceed to show some love.

I used to go to a vintage store back home that gave you a free vintage scarf with every purchase. This inevitably ended in a large amount of silk, square, rectangle, and cotton swatches around my closet. I always dreamed up these amazing ways I would put all of the pretty patterns and colors to use, but like a good portion of my vintage finds, the scarves ended up in a drawer of accessories. I pull them out from time to time to add a something extra to an outfit, but I've always been perplexed by the plain white one I just couldn't let go of. Something about the simple color and perfect size made me keep it, but I was never able to put it to use. Over the weekend I took inspiration from a few watercolor images and hand painted pieces, pulled out my brushes and paints, and dove into an accessory DIY of adding a pop of color to the plain scarf. A few simple steps and my plain square became a colorful grid of dots that will surely see more time on the outside, rather than being stuffed into a drawer.

As soon as it begins to rain I start thinking of cozy days inside, movies, a blanket, and a fire in my make believe fireplace. I like watching the puddles form from the inside, it's a much drier and warmer practice, but when I do have to brave the wetness outside, I like to take that cozy feeling with me. When I was younger I used to hold on to my hairstyles for far too long, turning them in to an everyday routine rather than adding some variation now and then. Of course, my sixth grade hands didn't quite understand the concept of blow drying and curling my strands into place, but the years of wearing a simple ponytail really can't be excused. Now that my hair and I have reached a good point, I often like to revisit the days of the pulled back style by turning it into a polished look perfect for evening or a voluminous addition to any look. The soft curls and slight retro bump are incredibly easy to achieve and add a fun twist to evening wear when you want to stand out in a sea of perfect long curls.

1. Start with natural curls or a slight wave to give your ponytail a little shape. The point is to be slightly messy, not perfect ringlets (try this great tutorial for natural waves)

2. Starting at the crown of your head, brush back the section at the top of your head. This creates a slight division between your bangs and the spot you are about to backcomb.

3. Starting at the front of your crown, take a layer of hair and back comb it with a comb or brush. Flip that layer forward and continue with the section directly behind the first. Repeat until about four layers have been back combed or you reach the spot where your ponytail will be secured. Flip layers back and spray lightly with hairspray, brushing hair into place.

4. Gather hair from the bottom, taking care to leave teased part slightly loose. Secure with an elastic. Use comb to add volume to crown by brushing upwards slightly. Don't worry if small hair don't reach, that adds to the undone look.

5. Touch up the ponytail by curling a few sections, then take a small piece of hair to wrap around the base. Secure with a bobby pin from underneath.

6. Finish with light hairspray, then let everything fall slightly into place.

For most of the weekend I'm in jeans and light makeup, holding on to the last few days of hairstyles before my strands give up and the whole thing goes into a messy bun, but mixed into those casual looks, I do like to spruce it up a bit and get a little dressy. My favorite polished look is a pair of streamlined trousers and a silk blouse. The combo can quickly become overly corporate, but paired with bright shoes and an abundance of necklaces, the look is perfect for your Sunday's best. I took a pair of blue slacks and a simple white blouse, added a collection of sparkle, then spent the rest of the afternoon feeling much fancier than my usual laid back gear allows for.

Whiskey caramel sauce

I'm not a big sundae person, give me some rainbow sprinkles with a Yogurtland cup and I am happy as can be, but from time to time, when I make a special dinner, I like to finish it off with something sweet and a little decadent. I have been eager to make caramel ever since I was given a pot that could actually withstand a steady flow of heat and this past weekend seemed like the perfect time to test out the boiled sugar concoction. This simple recipe has only four ingredients and is about as easy to make as watching sugar and water boil into a rich golden syrup. I had a minor moment of shock after adding the cream only to find my beautiful bronzed caramel quickly turning into a ball of sticky goo, but a steady whisking hand easily remedied the problem. Topped off with a healthy dose of whiskey, this ice cream addition was definitely a reminder that sprinkles aren't always the only option for toppings...although the slight buzz was an unexpected outcome.

Whiskey caramel sauce

1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 cup cream
3 tablespoons whiskey

Boil sugar and water on medium heat in a small saucepan until clear liquid has turned into a deep golden hue. This will take about 15+ minutes.

As soon as deep color is reached, remove pot from heat and add cream, whisking constantly. Liquid may seize up, but keep stirring making sure to scrape bottom.

Once liquid is creamy, add whiskey.

Caramel will be slightly runny (because it's not the fake stuff!), but after refrigerating overnight, it becomes a little thicker.

Last weekend was a perfect escape back home to visit with family and friends. The days were incredibly warm, but still made for a great way to enjoy the last few days of Summer...since the moment I stepped off the plane in Detroit I was welcomed by a burst of cold windy air. I probably should be a little sadder at the fact that impending snowstorms are only a few months away, but for now I prefer to be blissfully ignorant and welcome the colder weather with Fall knits and crisp blouses. As seen in my last outfit, I'm definitely on board with the bright color trend, but this time I opted for a few warmer colors that are sure to be a heavily worn as the leaves start to turn colors. A little collar popping out of a cozy sweater and heels finished in the cold weather fabric of choice, suede, I felt every bit as collegiate and Fall ready as the new students warming up to their new home in Ann Arbor.

I picked up this book last week after an impromptu yogurt run turned into a "let's go ravage the shelves of Border's before they close" run. I had been eyeing this book for some time partly because it is dedicated to all thing exquisite. From red lipstick worn after World War 2 to the uproar in England brought on by the top hat, this book gives a charming and informative insight into all things classy, feminine, and simply elegant. It's perfect to pick up every now and then to read something new while adding an exquisite moment to an otherwise average day, not to mention, the book itself is a beautiful addition to a coffee table or growing library shelf. I think this is a must add to any collection if only to amaze and engage those around you at your next party with your keen knowledge of the history of the unicorn or the art of Japanese food arranging.

I love adding pops of color to my wardrobe and since the summer months have been begging for a bright pink, sunny yellow, and coral shade for almost every outfit, I'm pretty excited this colorful trend will be stretching into Fall. Since the weather is starting to change a bit (although today's humid day was completely unexpected) I decided to pull out a new pair of fuchsia slacks to wear out for an early dinner with friends. Paired with slightly darker, yet equally breezy and bold top, these lightweight yet cool weather pants will be the perfect transition from August's balmy weather to September's crisp days ahead. Even though I'm very excited for the windy days and falling leaves ahead, these bright colors will help keep things cheerful even on the grayest days.

I hope everyone has a great long weekend. I'm heading to Los Angeles for a weekend with family, friends, and some much needed time at home. Can't wait!

Beer batter shrimp and basil

I try to eat healthy and for the most part my lunches of fresh salads with yogurt and some fruit help me stay on that path, but I do know when that healthy tendency slips into my dinner menu, Paul probably isn't as thrilled to eat that tasty arugula with watermelon salad as I am. This is why I think he was extra excited when I came home with a bottle of beer claiming our dinner would require a batter made with beer and vodka and a cast iron pot for frying. I don't know how to fry and the little shrieks coming from the kitchen after each plunk of the shrimp were a testament to the fact that this will be a few a far between event, but aside from the minor fear of scalding oil, this gourmet (made easy) recipe for beer battered shrimp with basil was the tastiest reward I could have asked for.

The key is to heat the oil slowly and only place a few shrimp in at a time so the temperature doesn't drop too low causing a less crispy batter. I also found the basil slightly hard to wrap in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, the little leaves start to stick perfectly and fry quickly and easily. Overall, the outcome was a restaurant worthy taste that was the perfect excuse to forgo the healthy routine for one night....although I did manage to sneak a salad onto the plate.

This weekend was mostly spend running errands, getting ready for Fall with a little shopping, and cleaning up a bit around the house (two long haired people and a cat really don't make for clean floors by the end of the week). To relax a little bit, Paul and I decided to try somewhere new for dinner, which meant venturing out of town and heading into Detroit for an early meal. We stopped by Good Girls go to Paris Crepes, a tasty crepe cafe nestled on the outskirts of the city near the beautiful library and Institute of the Arts buildings. The rather large restaurant smells like sweet crepe batter when you enter and the chalkboard of sweet and savory options, like chevre and fig jam, makes it incredibly fun, and quite hard, to pick just one . My spinach, provolone, and herbes de provence pick tasted amazing and the slightly golden edges from the authentic crepe grill made the folded treat even more authentic. It was the perfect break in the day and an excuse to pretend we were in Paris just for the night.

Whenever I go vintage shopping I find myself instantly drawn to the racks of lightweight and sheer blouses. They're items that can work with almost anything and have a great ability to give an outfit a masculine touch while still being completely feminine. This striped one is a little on the billowy side, but paired with a structured jacket, the outfit feels more put together than over-sized chic. Not to mention, the look combines a few of my favorite materials and patterns, although I did discover that the little dangling chains make a noise very similar to a dog collar, (which humorously signaled my entrances all day long).

I picked up this skirt when I bought this green gem a few weeks ago and have been anxious to mix it into my wardrobe. The silk material instantly reminds me of an evening look and the exaggerated back has a great formal feel, but I wanted to find a way to make it work for the daytime. After finding a safari-inspired vest, I pulled out the skirt, added a bit of sparkle with a thin belt, and created a look that was more everyday than formal affair, although much more special than the usual work gear. The flowing fabric and twinkling touches were the perfect excuse to be little more excited for a Monday morning back in the office.

I love the look of worn home decor, with it's slightly frayed rugs, rough wood accents, and nature-inspired materials. It reminds me of being on a ranch or near a desert and is something I would love to infuse in my future home. The key is to mix it sparingly and pair it with modern accents or with bold touches of color. I picture a traditional rug, modern white sofa, and a burst of color with pillows and a throw. The pairings are endless, but looking through these great pieces instantly made me think of a well-worn home out west.

I love the seventies denim trend of wide legs or crisp trouser pants, but there is something about a skinny, pipe, or cigarette leg that will always be my go-to option. When the sweet people at Paige Denim sent me these Verdugo Ultra Skinny jeans, I knew I could easily work them into my denim rotation. The stretchy denim has the perfect weight which makes them incredibly soft and comfortable to put on (which is probably why I have been wearing them non-stop since they arrived) and the jet black shade has that great classic feel I look for in black denim. While I realize this is my second drink recipe in one week, I was extremely excited to share this one since its crisp refreshing taste holds a bit of sentiment. Right after Paul and I were engaged, we threw a little informal engagement party full of friends, food, and lots of sparkling, summertime drinks. I made Tuscan Lemonade from scratch and even after picking my mom's lemon tree down to it's twiggy branches and squeezing two pitchers of fresh lemonade, I knew the hard work was going to be better than any pre-mixed variety. The fresh juice is blended with limoncello, citrus vodka, and thyme simple syrup to make a rather dangerously drinkable cocktail. A few weeks ago I made this to bring along to a friend's bbq and while I didn't ravage any lemon trees in the process, the summer flavors instantly reminded me of our pre-wedding celebration.

Tuscan Lemonade: Makes 1 pitcher
Juice of 20 lemons
16 oz. citrus vodka
6 oz. Limoncello
8 oz. water
Thyme simple syrup to taste (recipe below)

- To make the simple syrup: Combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in small saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat, add 1 handful of fresh thyme, and cover with lid. The longer this sits, the stronger the thyme flavor will be (overnight is best)

- Combine lemon juice, vodka, limoncello, and water in pitcher and let refrigerate (overnight or a few hours).

- Add simple syrup until desired sweetness and thyme flavor is reached. Serve over ice.

From time to time I search through my folders of photos to see if I can find any inspiration for posts and on rare occasions I come across an event that I never shared on the blog. This time I happened upon the photos I took in an amazing vintage store Paul and I stumbled upon in Portland. In between snacking on lavender ice cream and hunting through a vintage cavern of a store, seen here, we popped into Reveille, an incredible store that greets you with a tattered American flag, striped walls, and racks of frilly clothing, wartime jackets, and dust worn work boots. The decor has the perfect western frontier vibe with its solid wood shelves and cowhide rugs, while the stacks of selvedge denim, patterned dresses, and new items like Wildfox and Opening Ceremony take care of the clothing needs.

I've slowly been building up the skirt section of my closet since shorts aren't really my favorite and jeans are pretty much the last thing I want to put on when it's warm outside. This pleated green version was the exact thing I needed to round out my Summertime selection. With it's lightweight material and perfect workday length, this twirl worthy option was the perfect blend for a dressed up day look comprised of heels and a loose knit sweater. Since I was feeling a little dressier, I paired a few antique inspired necklaces for added shine, which helped the entire look transition easily into evening.

While it's sad Borders is going out of business, I had no shame filling my arms with discounted books this weekend in an effort to help them clear their shelves. After picking up a few nightstand reads, I headed over to the cookbooks to dig through the culinary pages a bit. On the bottom shelf I found the compact and brightly colored cookbook, Paletas. Filled with freshly made frozen delights and refreshing aguas frescas, I thought this book would be the perfect compliment to this one I was given as a wedding gift. I decided to test out the horchata recipe, which is a blend of milk, rice, and cinnamon. This milky drink was one of my favorite things to get when I was living at USC, the best coming from the L.A. Grand Central Market. The recipe is open to all sorts of flavors and combinations, but nothing is quite as tasty as the classic, which was quickly drank over the course of the night.

Horchata (from Paletas by Fany Gerson): Makes 6 cups

2/3 cups long grain rice
3 cups warm water
1 (2-inch) piece Mexican cinnamon stick
1 cup sugar
2 cups milk (I used skim)
ground Mexican cinnamon (I used Vietnamese)

- Blend rice in blender until flour-like consistency.

- Combine rice, water, and cinnamon stick in pitcher and whisk together. Refrigerate for 5 hours or overnight.

- Transfer mixture to a blender and blend until smooth. Pour mix into pitcher, running it through a sieve or cheesecloth as you pour. Press solids with a spoon to get all of the juice out.

- Stir in milk and sugar, refrigerate until cold. Serve over ice with a sprinkle of cinnamon on the top.

I love filling my home with fun little things that add something special to each room. Whether it's a specifically placed keepsake box on the dresser, a stack of coffee table books in the living room, even a particularly sweet note waiting on the entry table is considered part of the decor. Every once in a while I like to sit back and enjoy these little things because unfortunately, the work weeks fly by and without noticing it I'm tossing out dead flowers or stashing pretty notecards into desk drawers. Sometimes I feel like decade dressing can get a little costumey since it's a fine line between amazing style and an amazing Halloween costume. One trend I'm excited to try, yet very cautious of going overboard with is the seventies throwback. I could live in floral dresses, loose blouses, and long slightly tousled hair forever, but I'd like to take inspiration from the style, rather than committing my entire wardrobe to it. This outfit helped me reach that happy medium, while still feeling modern. An armful of metal bracelets and a bright clutch added a pop of color to the look, while the draped blouse broke up the crisp feel from the flared jeans. Overall, an easy daytime look that was a fun (non-costume) approach to the trend.

I love mixing bright colors into my wardrobe, but after searching through my shoes hoping to find something colorful to add to an outfit, I realized I'd fallen into the black and brown high heel rut. There are a few colorful options, but for the most part that extra pop of something bright isn't going to come from my feet. I've promised myself that the next pair of shoes I invest in will be something that can hold up to the colorful pieces of my wardrobe and after searching, I came up with some great options for everyday and nighttime looks. Mixed in with a few sparkling embellishments, these shoes will definitely be a welcome option from the basic pump.

Arugula & ricotta spaghetti with lemon

Many days I have a clear vision of what I want to make for dinner. Usually there is something waiting in the fridge that has its corresponding pieces, which whip up nicely into a complete meal. Other nights, I stare blankly at the fridge and exclaim "Let's have breakfast for dinner!" toast and eggs it is. Last night was the latter, but when I got past the horror of realizing I had only one egg sitting in its little crate, I racked my brain a little more and concocted this recipe for arugula and ricotta spaghetti with lemon. Using ingredients that always tend to live in my kitchen and finally putting to use a few of the dozens of lemons I seem to buy every week, I stirred in the remaining fresh arugula and creamy ricotta to make a surprisingly light summer meal. Although I can never pass up the browned glory that is toast, I was happy with my last minute dinner plans.

Arugula & ricotta spaghetti with lemon
3/4 pack of spaghetti
1 lemon (zest first, then juice)
2-3 cups arugula
1/2 cup ricotta
salt & pepper

-Boil water and cook spaghetti according to package. Before draining, reserve 1/2 cup pasta water

-Return pasta to pot and stir in lemon zest and juice, arugula, ricotta, salt & pepper, and pasta water.

-Stir until ricotta has coated everything evenly.

A few weeks ago I dropped into one of my favorite vintage stores to look around for something new. I tend to hunt for summer dresses, blouses, and the occasional hand bag, but this time I found, tucked into the rack of two-piece dress sets and jackets, an amazing emerald green ball gown. A perfectly kept Victor Costa bow dress for about $30 that zipped too! The thought of "where would I ever wear a ball gown" never entered my head and I walked out of the store triumphantly. I like to think if I imagine needing a gown, the opportunity to wear one will come along, but while I wait, I feel a little dress up never hurt anyone. Last night after dinner was finished and the night was winding down, I pulled out my highest heels and threw on my vintage find for a little early evening black-tie affair...ok, so it was only in my house, but the action did cause Paul to exclaim "let's go dancing!" The rest of the night felt a little more sparkly and provided the perfect break in an otherwise average week.

I love the feeling of walking into a beach house, opening the doors and windows, and taking in the slightly sun stained linens and accessories waiting neatly for their visitors. While many beach houses can take the "sun and sand" decorating tip a little too far, I do like touches of sea water-worn goods. Even though I'll have to dream of a beach house getaway, reclaimed wood, canvas rugs in warm colors, and ocean blue glass always remind me of beach living. I've also been inspired by a few other pieces, like shipwrecked cartons, unfinished lights, and of course a leather bound journal to jot down important sunbathing notes. Added in a few key places, these little bits of ocean decor make the perfect sandy setting.

Last weekend I celebrated a free day by enjoying the fresh fare at the farmers market, indulging in a leisurely brunch, then switching between a stack of magazines and recorded tv shows for the rest of the evening. While I felt slightly guilty for only being semi-productive, I relished in the fact that I had a day with nothing but lounging to do. To compliment the easy day I paired my favorite blouse with a pair of perfect summer shorts (they are the denim gem I have searched tirelessly for), add a long bag with a little embellishment and I was ready to pop between fresh fruits and veggies and a morning cup of coffee.

I'm usually more of an eyeliner person, but that has never stopped me from oohing and awing over the vibrant, candy-colored lipsticks in the beauty department. Since everything is heating up this week, I decided to compliment the balmy weather with an equally fiery shade. This has definitely inspired me to pull out a few other bold colors and mix them into the rotation. Fuchsia for an everyday play on the normal pink, classic red which I always carry in my bag, and a summertime orange, which is amazing during the day have become my favorite go-to bold choices.

While I would love to say I am one of those girls who can pop out of the shower, knot together a messy braid, then undo my luscious waves around lunchtime, I am afraid my hair routine is a little more high maintenance. For me, a straightening iron and blow dryer are my security blankets, throw in a curling iron for fancy events and I'll be good to go, so when the amazing people at Misikko sent me a straightening iron to test out, I unhesitatingly warmed it up for a try. I decided to pair it with this amazing blowout tutorial because along with my dream of air-dried beach hair, I would also love to master a go-to blow dry routine. The steps are a little tricky in the beginning, but leave a surprising amount of volume in the end.

All you have to do is section hair into 5 sections (6 if you have thick hair) and secure with a clip. Then dry each section with nozzle down, rolling hair around the brush. Blast each section with cool air then repeat until head is dry. I like to use the straightening iron to smooth out the entire look, twisting each section around the iron to create a soft wave. I was particularly amazed at how shiny this one made my hair and loved how soft it felt before I even added any product. I love getting dressed up for special events. There's something about taking those few extra moments on your hair and makeup, or trying on a couple of dresses before choosing the right one, that makes going out a little more fun. For my cousin's wedding this past weekend I did just that and pulled out one of my favorite dresses for the occasion. This retro halter piece has been with me for several years and every time I wear it I feel perfectly dressed up, without being over the top. The heavy cotton fabric and playful stripes keep the look young, while the dropped back skirt makes twirling a necessary occurrence. Paired with a high ponytail and bow shoes, I felt perfectly polished and ready to enjoy a night of dancing.

Whenever I have a weekend full of sweets and less than healthy eating I love getting everything back on track with a light and refreshing meal. In the summer my fridge is always full of fresh fruit stored in little bowls perfect for snacking and recently one of those has been watermelon. After this past weekend I wanted a cool entree for dinner, so I used this recipe and headed for the fridge to pull out the chilled ingredients. A simple toss and whisk of the lemon and olive oil vinaigrette and the salad was ready to go. My idea of a perfect hot weather anti-heat recipe.

Multnomah Falls

This weekend I attended the wedding of my cousin at an insanely gorgeous vineyard perched high above Hood River, Oregon. It felt so good to be back in an area with towering mountains and lush trees, the entire visit reminded me of camping trips with the family and vacationing in Yosemite (that's my inner nature girl coming out). Although the trip was short, we managed to get in a good amount of sightseeing and spent the remainder of the afternoon strolling through the Northwest District, snacking on locally made ice cream and popping into a number of hidden boutiques and vintage stores. My favorite stop being a huge waterfall located between the city and Hood River which made for more than a few staggering photos.

Stationary from Wedding Paper Divas

It's been 2 months since our wedding and I still feel like I'm catching up on real life (did anyone else have this problem??). The empty frames are just begging for some reception photos to fill them, while my wedding shoes are still boxed waiting to get a good cleaning...white shoes and the outdoors really don't mix well. I am happy to say that the biggest thing looming over me is on it's way towards completion, the "Thank You" notes. To make the task more exciting I decided a fun card was the only way to go and while my weeks of narrowing down and comparing one possible card to the next is the main reason I'm starting this process so late, I did manage to find the perfect note. A simple flat card is always my top pick. They look clean and always pop out of the envelope declaring a sweet message on first glance. Seen here, letter writing is a favorite thing of mine and hopefully these notes will help get me back into the swing of things quickly.

I love creating outfits with the pieces in my closet that I just can't let go of. While I may stare blankly at the closet more than a few times a week thinking "If only I had something like this...", I do like to keep my favorite pieces in the rotation. This vest was one of my first vintage purchases and I have worked it into my attire ever since I found it hanging on one of the stuffed racks in a vintage store back home. Paired with a skirt that gets the same amount of wear, I put together a look that worked in my favorite silky materials for the season.

On a side note, you may have noticed that the plants from this post are gone. That's because I accidentally killed them and their little twiggy remnants are carefully cropped out. FYI, I can't keep plants alive unless they are cut, wrapped in paper, and ready to drop into a vase.

Eat, drink, sparkle

This weekend Paul and I hosted a little fourth of July celebratory party that included lots of fresh food and sweets, friends, a bit of impromptu karaoke, and a mini firework show topped off with large amounts of sparklers. Our cozy place definitely reminded us that it was incredibly hot outside, but we kept everything flowing by placing a bit of food in every room, setting out pre-mixed drinks and glasses for easy pouring, and taking advantage of the open lawn for our sparkler party.

Cutting boards and fruit bowls doubled as platters for appetizers, like this pea pesto crostini, and fresh fruit.

The china cabinet made a perfect dessert display for lemon meringue cupcakes while lace-inspired place mats tied to whole look together.

The counter made a perfect spot for a mini bar where all of the ingredients for our blueberry vodka and lemonade could easily be found. A decorative silver bowl and vase of fresh mint added a special touch.

Each room had little snacks, like this platter of cookies and strawberries. The place mat could be seen throughout the house, while the napkins tied in the yellow theme.

A jar or bright sparklers added to the decor, while inviting everyone to grab a few and light them as soon as it was dark.

This has been one of those weeks where everything feels slightly off, so I'm looking forward to a long weekend of cooking and relaxing, mixed in with a bit of partying too...maybe even a sparkler here or there. This week's Fancy Friday is all about the little things that make spaces slightly cuter. A collection of wonderfully feminine trinkets or a plate of metallic wrapped candies are all it takes to make the setting luxurious and the moment memorable. Hope everyone enjoys their 4th! During the summer a few of my favorite things to wear are silky pieces that blow perfectly in the wind. I love their light weight and ability to make any sort of walking in a slight breeze instantly more fun. I've collected a number of silk shirts from vintage stores over the years and this bright yellow one has been a piece that has made it through many moves and relocating. Paired with a pleated blue skirt and a worn in leather belt, the afternoon winds were infinitely more fun to play in.
